Alex Salmond will stand down as Scottish first minister following referendum defeat.



Leader of the Scottish National party says he will stand down in November when a new leader of the party will be chosen


Alex Salmond concedes defeat in the independence referendum after Scotland votes to remain part of the United Kingdom by 55% to 45%. More than 3.6 million votes were cast in the referendum, a number Salmond calls a 'triumph for democracy'. The first minister calls on the British government to rapidly meet its promise of more powers for Edinburgh.
